Atlantic Recycling Group participates in Maryland Recycling Network 2017 Conference

{Rockville, MD June 13, 2017} – The Maryland Recycling Network held it’s 2017 Conference at Turf Valley In Ellicott City Maryland on June 12th. Entitled “The 4th R: Rethink”, the program largely focused on informing and educating attendees about creative solutions employed all over the country to create and maintain sustainable recycling programs.

Attendees from across the state were able to listen to several panel discussions, including one on Market Madness. Moderated by Melissa Filiaggi of Maryland Environmental Services, a panel of coordinators and vendors discussed the methods they use to predict, create and respond to evolving and elusive materials markets.

Anna Tompkins, Marketing Director for Atlantic Recycling Group spoke to the importance of working together with vendors and customers to keep scrap metal streams free of electronic scrap. “I can’t stress enough to those of you who have control over your streams to keep e-scrap, particularly circuit boards, out of your scrap steel for a number of reasons.” Tompkins remarked. “The benefit to working with local, reputable companies is the ability to work through issues like contamination to a solution without long, protracted renegotiations of existing contracts. Education and communication between vendors and suppliers go a long way.”

When asked what “What is your key indicator for predicting market prices and why?”  panelists responded with a variety of answers, including anecdotal supplier feedback and various market publications. Tompkins specifically referenced “Chinese demand and consumption of steel and copper are strong short range indicators of how markets for those items will move.”

Atlantic Recycling Group, located in Rockville Maryland, owns and operates Montgomery Scrap Corporation and United Iron & Metal.
